Llanbedr and the surrounding areas

We are very lucky to have an amazing population of birds here in Llanbedr. We are even luckier to have species in the area around Gwynfryn Farm that are fairly rare, many guests come and stay at the farm for this reason and with their help we have compiled a list of sightings. More after the jump!

]]> Cwm Bychan & Cwm Nantcol Hills and Valleys:

Kestrel, Peregrine, Raven, Buzzard, Grey Wagtail, Common Sandpiper (Pair), Restart, Wood Warbler, Siskin, Cuckoo, White Throat, Garden Warbler, Grasshopper Warbler.

Coed Lleyty Walter:

This piece of woodland is a fantastic place to start. It has a wide variety of woodland species:Blackcap, Wood Warbler, Willow Warbler, Nut Hatch, Gold Crest. with the more common; Wren, Chaffinch and various Tits.

Dolcymerau is set at the entrance to two enchanting valleys, Cwm Bychan, with its tranquil lake leads to the Roman Steps. Lots of gentle rambles and woodland walks begin just above the cottage - the waterfall and nature trail is very special and there are fabulous views from the plateau above the waterfall across to Shell Island, Tremadog Bay and Lleyn Peninsula.

Dolcymerau easily sleeps eight people, with five Bedrooms including two double rooms, one twin and two single rooms, one of which is a walk through; extra pull out beds and a cot are available if needed.

The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway

Llanfair Slate Caverns

You enter this old but important slate mine is through it's the main tunnel, under the twin arches of the crypt and into the lofty, spectacular, cathedral cavern. The slate mine's tunnels and caverns are all man made and over a century old. It's slate, found in long veins between layers of Pre- Cambrian rocks, is amongst the oldest in the world, and many industrial towns of Britain and Ireland have roofs made from Llanfair slate.

Descend Jacobs ladder and wander through the tunnels and chambers, and look for the old drilling holes. There is a likeness of a human face in the mighty number 6 cavern. As you emerge from the caverns, you face the breath-taking view of Cardigan Bay, from the Preseli mountains in the south to the Lleyn peninsular in the north.

From the entrance you can look down at Shell Island and the Artro Estuary, at low tide the fourteen mile length of St Patrick's causeway can be seen.

Dyffryn Ardudwy Burial Chambers

This part of Wales has a long and rich history stretching all the way back to the Neolithic period you can visit numerous tomb's, stone circles, castles and ancient monuments within a short distance of the farm.

Dyffryn Burial Chambers

Dyffryn Ardudwy Burial Chambers

Dyffryn Ardudwy, only four miles from Gwynfryn Farm, has an extraordinary history and is lucky enough to to have four neolithic burial chambers or Portal Dolmens. The first, known as 'Coetan Arthur' dates to around 3500BC, contains two dissimilar burial chambers originally covered by a cairn. Like many similar structures in Wales and Ireland the openings of both chambers face east, remains of a later cremation burial have been detected in the eastern chamber. These tombs are thought to be the earliest in Wales, possibly the British isles, and have contributed much to the dating of other Portal Dolmens in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

]]> You can find the Dyffryn Burial Chambers at the south end of Dyffryn Ardudwy village, signposted on left just before the school. Site is up short footpath with kissing gates, just a few hundred yards from the main coast road. Cors-y-gedol Burial Chamber

This monument stands beside a trackway leading out of Dyffryn and dates from the Bronze Age. Little remains of the burial chamber itself apart from the capstone which leans against the cairn and a single standing stone to the east. OS map reference SH603228 coordinates for Google Maps are 52.7846443717514,-4.07285401203086.

Bron-y-Foel Isaf Burial Chamber

Sadly Bron-y-Foel Isaf is badly damaged, the tomb's large capstone has slipped from its perch. It's location, however, just a few miles from Dyffryn, is amazingly scenic making it well worth a visit. OS map reference OS SH607 246 coordinates for Google Maps are 52.8009183327914,-4.06769420398323

Harlech's P38 Lightning

Harlech's P38 Lightning, the 'Maid of Harlech'

Back in the summer of 2007 Harlech's beautiful beach gave up one of it's secrets, an American P38 lightening which had been hidden beneath the sand since it crashed on a training exercise during the second world war.

Local aviation historian Matt Rimmer, and the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) are fighting to preserve the wreck, having christened her the 'Maid of Harlech', they're seeking donations to raise the wreck next year.

Because of the plane's historical significance as the oldest surviving Eighth Air Force combat veteran and the fact that it's covered by the Military Remains Act we can't tell you exactly where it is, but we are looking forward to seeing this wonderful piece of local history preserved for Wales.

Harlech Castle & Village

Harlech's famous Castle

Only a four mile drive from our cottages and B&B Harlech offers an enthralling place to spend a day out.

One of the most stunning historic attractions in the area is Harlech's magnificent thirteenth century Castle, now part of the "Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Harlech, Beaumaris, Caernarfon and Conwy (Gwynedd)" World heritage site; reflecting both it's historical importance and remarkable state of preservation.

Built King Edward I during his conquest of Wales, it is notable for it's massive gatehouse, seizure by Owain Glyndŵr in 1404, and the seven year long siege during the Wars of the Roses chronicled in the famous Welsh anthem "Men of Harlech".

]]> The Castle is now operated by CADW, information on it's opening hours and admission fees can be found on the CADW website. It's also worth checking for upcoming displays by the Harlech Medieval Society who often perform historic recreations at the Castle and around Gwynedd and Ireland.

Harlech Village

Harlech's Beach, Rhinogydd Mountains & Mt. Snowdon

Overlooking Tremadog Bay and the Lleyn Peninsula Harlech is a small village with a long and proud history which offers a terrific selection of cafés, Tea Rooms, Restaurants, beaches and shops. The Traditional Sweet Shop and nearby Ice Cream Parlour are well worth a visit, offering a wide selection of home made ice creams and sweets unavailable elsewhere. The Plas Café offers unrivalled views of the Castle and Tremadog bay beaches which can be enjoyed along with stunning cream teas.

Harlech may be small but it also has one of the most amazing beaches in the area, unspoiled, and never busy this piece of coast line is both a National Nature Reserve and site of Special Scientific Interest, never mind being a wonderful children's play area! Between the dunes and the town you can find the luxurious links of the Royal St. David's Golf Club which offers summer rounds, complete with views of the Rhinogydd Mountain rage and Mt. Snowdon, from £50.00 per game or £65.00 per day.

Our nearest neighbours (around 200m up the road from the farm), Plas Gwynfryn, have recently started to host weddings and entertainment weekends. We are the nearest establishment offering accommodation for all the wedding guests, so if you're attending a ceremony or other event and would like accommodation with parking within walking distance of Plas Gwynfryn please get in touch.

The 2009 Beer Festival

The Llanbedr Beer Festival has been attracting people to the area for the last 5 years, this years festival takes place on the 24th - 25th September.

It is an excellent couple of days entertainment with loads of locally brewed beers, Welsh ciders and foods to sample as well as local bands and singers appearing in the evening. You can find more information on the beer festival's website.

We can provide various accommodation from B&B rooms to self contained cottages in which we offer short breaks and an almighty traditional Welsh Breakfast if you want to be spoiled!
